Mediation in Resolving Conflicts between Chimeric School Groups – A Restorative Practice in School

Absract. The relatively new phenomenon in school settings – chimeric school groups – creates new school ethos and deserves privileged attention and research. Apparently, new approaches are needed too. Mediation as a universal restorative practice has been adapted to school environment. It is exiting to verify its productivity towards resolving conflicts between chimeric school groups.
Keywords: mediation, restorative justice, conflict resolution, chimeric school groups

The Contribution of Model Teaching and Material Development to Physics Teaching: Faraday’s Law of Induction

Absract. This study aims to enable the subjects of physics lessons to be understood easily and permanently, to help the students associate the subjects with life when they do their jobs, and to develop the feel that they can construct a material through the information they gain in Physics lessons. The sample group of this study consists of 20 teacher-candidates studying at physics teaching department, Faculty of Kazım Karabekir Education, Atatürk University. The study was conducted in four steps: the first step is to choose the material to develop the model, the second step is to describe the relationship between material development and the subjects of physics lessons, the third step is to present the teaching model in the class and report it; and the last step is to take the students views on the model and modeling teaching. In conclusion, through this study the students take their own material to the classroom. Since they are responsible for all process from the construction of the material to its representation and reporting, the students have to use their all knowledge and experience. Semi-structured interviews carried out with the students have demonstrated that their levels of understanding scientific model development coming from history have increased, their high-level learning related to the physics subjects dealt with has occurred, and their self-confidence has also increased as they use their own skills and knowledge related to the topic.

Keywords: Faraday law, model teaching, teaching material

Acid Modified Baby Powder Based Talk-A Sorbent Material for Thin-Layer Chromatography

Absract. Baby powder based talc (BP) is modified by keeping in 0.3 M HCl solution at room temperature for 24 hours. The product, acid modified baby powder based talc, is called “modified-BPT”. Modified-BPT is investigated for their usefulness in the stationary phase of Thin-Liquid Chromatography (TLC). The separability of the components of a commercial ink has been tested on modified-BPT layers successfully. These results may be also said for the adaptability or validity on column chromatography.

Keywords: analytical chemistry, TLC, baby powder, modified baby powder talc, chromatography

A Centenary of the Birth of Professor Christo Ivanov [In Bulgarian]

Absract. The article presents the life story of the well-known Bulgarian organic chemist and university lecturer Professor Christo Ivanov as researched by members of his family. The author is his son who was Head of the Department of Organic Chemistry at the Medical University of Sofia. The paper contains a review of the principal achievements in Prof. Chr. Ivanov’s scientific work, amply illustrated with the respective chemical equations and accompanied by detailed analysis. Finally, a full list of Chr. Ivanov’s publications is presented.
Keywords: Prof. Chr. Ivanov, organic chemistry, naphthalene-magnesium, carbanion reactions, coumarin-chromane rearrangement

Context-Based Chemistry Lab Work with the Use of Computer-Assisted Learning System

Absract. The paper aims to show how the context-based approach can be applied to teaching the analytical chemistry course to the university students with major in food processing technology and food expertise. The article describes the principles that underlie the context-based teaching and innovative approaches to structuring analytical chemistry lab work using the computer-assisted learning system (CALS). Finally, the paper presents the results of testing this resource in the context-based lab work, and discusses its impact on developing relevant professional competencies in university students.
Keywords: context-based learning, information technology, lab work, food safety, chemical analysis of food products

Variation Degree in E-Learning Courses: Assessment through Feature Models

Absract. The current paper presents a model for assessing e-learning courses through the application of quantitative methods based on feature oriented domain analysis. The approach gives an opportunity to assess: 1) the variation degree of electronic courses specified in university standards through invariant feature diagrams which can be modified for the specific purpose; 2) the quality and design of e-learning platforms. The assessment can be conducted at two levels: in relation to the structure and organization of the platform and as regards the relations among the courses it offers. This in turn can be used as a technique for comparing distance learning standards of different universities and for improving courses. The paper presents a sample feature model of the elements of an electronic course with a calculated variation degree.

Keywords: e-learning courses, variation degree, functional models
