Abstract.<\/strong> The investigation in question is recorded in a series of thirty-eight\u00a0register entries on a case of financial malfeasance in recently-conquered Ottoman\u00a0Egypt that was investigated by officials from Ottoman Syria. This case appears in\u00a0the oldest existing m\u00fchimme defteri, a register of important affairs of the Ottoman\u00a0Empire, and provides detailed information about how the Ottomans governed their\u00a0provinces. It lists many of the taxes and revenues collected by the Ottomans and\u00a0discusses the most important treasury personnel in the province and the documents\u00a0they created. It also describes how the Ottoman state worked to control those\u00a0personnel even at a distance and to induce these officials to adhere to concepts of\u00a0just imperial rule. The article describes the issues in the case and identifies the\u00a0provincial officials involved in the investigation, the documents they were supposed\u00a0to collect or create, and the procedures they were commanded to follow. The\u00a0conclusion examines the implications of the case for our understanding of the place\u00a0of Syria and Egypt within the wider Ottoman Empire in the sixteenth century. This\u00a0episode presents an instance of the Ottoman integration of newly conquered lands\u00a0in a period when records are fairly plentiful (in contrast to the conquest of Rumeli,\u00a0where most of our evidence comes from chronicles written at a later date). Beyond\u00a0that, this case illuminates the whole issue of how an empire operates and challenges\u00a0the stereotype of general Ottoman oppression of the conquered territories.<\/p>\n

(A Diptych of Essays in Historical Anthropology)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Abstract.<\/strong> The text contains elements from the history of the town of Pirdop and its` surroundings during the 19-th century. The codex of the local church community has been studied in detail. The accounting within was noted for two decades by the hand of the local notable, Simon. It starts from the decoration of the new church and further on contains data on the functioning of the church community as a microcredit institution. The core of local notable families was examined, as they were the leaders of the church community. More recent pre-Liberation ethnographic documentation,\u00a0gathered by the teacher Simeon Aldov (Serdanov) was examined from a general\u00a0anthropological, \u201epatrimonial\u201c, socioeconomical, ecological and geographical\u00a0point of view in the frame of the region. Robbery and crime, local political unrest\u00a0and their consequences have been mentioned in a cholistic perspective, in the spirit\u00a0of local and regional studies.<\/p>\n

Abstract.<\/strong> In 1809 the British public was scandalized by the affair of the Duke of\u00a0York with Marry Anne Clarke. Rumors of the affair spread so widely that the story\u00a0was articulated very widely in Britain for more than three months. The reputation\u00a0of the Hanoverian prince was badly damaged by the testimony given forward by\u00a0Mrs. Clarke. While the second son of King George III was Commander in Chief\u00a0of the British Army at that time, the story was not only a public scandal, but rather\u00a0a political crisis for the whole nation. News about corruption, debauchery and\u00a0intrigues flooded the press, and this whole matter put the integrity of the national\u00a0leaders to the challenge. Nevertheless, the outcome of the affair underwent a\u00a0dramatic and unexpected turn.<\/p>\n

Abstract.<\/strong> The article highlights the main difficulties and problems that Bulgarian\u00a0teachers face abroad, particularly in the US, in bringing up patriotic feelings in\u00a0children born and growing outside of Bulgaria.
