Laska Laskova, Krasimira Aleksova,

Yana Sivilova, Danka Apostolova

Sofia University

https://doi.org/10.53656/bel2025-5-1LD

Abstract. This article presents a qualitative data analysis of survey conducted in 2025 with 1618 Bulgarian native speakers. The study tests the hypothesis that, under certain conditions, contemporary Bulgarian usage a tendency to mix aorist and imperfect tenses. Focus is placed on the substitution of indicative imperfect forms with aorist counterparts in contexts involving primary underived imperfective verbs. Quantitative results support the view that this is not a matter of isolated deviations, but rather a consistent tendency: although respondents more frequently selected the imperfect (median: 78.73%), in some cases the proportion of aorist forms exceeds 30%. The discussion outlines key patterns observed in such substitutions, with particular attention to factors that appear to trigger the phenomenon.

Gocho Gochev

St. Cyril and St. Methodius University of Veliko Tarnovo

https://doi.org/10.53656/bel2025-5-2G

Abstract. This article attempts to describe and analyze the Bulgarian microsystem of gestures for agreement and disagreement performed with the head. It is based on personal observations of real situations, namely evidence from gestures depicted in scenes from Bulgarian films. The microsystem includes parallel functioning gestures that are both non-standard, i.e. inherent in Bulgarian communication and not inherent in the communication of the vast majority of other nations, as well as standard, characteristic of both the communication of other nations and Bulgarians. The article investigates the differences in their implementation, the conditions for distinguishing them in the process of communication and their systemic nature.

The Function of Eponymous Terms in Modern Latin Medical Terminology and Their Reflection on the Bulgarian System

Gergana Petkova

Medical University – Plovdiv (Bulgaria)

https://doi.org/10.53656/bel2025-5-3GP

Abstract. The research subject of the present text is the eponymous terms, part of the Latin medical terminology and their reflection on the Bulgarian system. References are made, when necessary, to examples found in English, when an influence on the other two systems on the focus of investigation is observed. The interest in the studied terminological units is caused, on the one hand, by their significant number in all the three subsystems of medical science – anatomical, clinical and pharmaceutical, as well as by the rules in their updating, regulation and codification that could be defined as inhomogeneous.

Lexicographic excerpt and linguistic analysis were applied as the main research methods here. Specialized books, dictionaries, encyclopedias, textbooks, and other materials were used as sources of scientific information. The examples are classified according to their syntactic structure, as well as thematically depending on the type of the basic onym that is used for their derivation. The latest trends related to their usage and functioning within the framework of international specialized vocabulary are also monitored and commented on.

Keywords: eponym; medical terminology; Latin language; Bulgarian language; codification; stigmatization

The South of the Hometown and the Problem of Immigration

Tatiana Ichevska, Ivan Ruskov

„Paisii Hilendarski“ University of Plovdiv

https://doi.org/10.53656/bel2025-5-5T

Abstract. Within this text, we examine the traumatic narrative of emigration presented in Bulgarian and Croatian texts from the 1990s onwards. Whether it is the fate of an individual character or a family, social, ethnic, and/or religious community, the problems in the texts selected for observation are multifaceted and multi-layered. During the observations, limited to texts selected by us, we will identify the common neuralgic points in them and seek answers to several key questions: why and how the life of a human immigrant becomes a traumatic narrative when he leaves his homeland, whether the exile dies completely or only a part of him dies, what are the places he inhabits abroad, how does the time of the exile abroad pass - in emptiness, in nostalgia, in memories and waiting for return, is it possible to return home.

Keywords: emigration; trauma; heterotopia; utopia; loneliness; foreigner; Bulgarian literature; Croatian literature

International Scientific Conference “Bulgarian Catholics and Italy through the Centuries”, Dedicated to the 350th Anniversary of the Death of the Bulgarian Catholic Prelates Petar Bogdan Bakšić, Petar Parčević and Filip Stanislavov (Naples, October 28 – 29, 2024)

Tatiana Lekova

Neapolitan University “Orientale”

https://doi.org/10.53656/bel2025-5-6TL

Abstract. The article presents, in a historical perspective, the political and cultural relations between Bulgaria and Italy, discussed at the International Scientific Conference “Bulgarian Catholics in Italy through the Centuries,” organized by the Neapolitan University “Orientale” on October 28 – 29, 2024, in Naples. The scientific forum was dedicated to the 350th anniversary of the death of three Bulgarian intellectuals and patriots who defined the character of the “golden 17th century” of Catholicism in the Bulgarian lands: the prelates Petar Bogdan Bakshich, Petar Parchevich, and Filip Stanislavov. The reports examined still unpublished or little-known data and documents regarding the activities of these heroes from the archives of the Vatican, Venice, and Naples, which reveal even more clearly the connection of these figures and their followers in the 18th and 19th centuries with Italy and the Italian language through which they became the first propagators of the Bulgarian national Revival.

Two Unpublished Letters of Pavel Ioscich (Jošić), Catholic Archbishop of Sofi a from the Early 18th Century

Iva Manova

Institute of Philosophy and Sociology – Bulgarian Academy of Sciences

https://doi.org/10.53656/bel2025-5-7IM

Abstract. The publication presents (in original and in translation) two letters of Pavel Ioscich (Jošić), Catholic Archbishop of Sofia from the beginning of the 18th century. The decades between the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century are less documented than other periods in the history of Bulgarian Catholicism so the aim of this paper will be to contribute to partially filling the gaps in our knowledge thanks to the testimonies on the situation of the Catholic community contained in the two documents. In addition, some facts from the life and work of Pavel Ioscich, as well as of his fellow missionaries, are presented and the topic discussed in the letters about the opportunities for training Paulician youth in papal educational institutions in Italy is commented on. The published letters are from the Propaganda Fide Historical Archives in the Vatican.

Keywords: Bulgarian Catholics; Paulicians; Catholic Archdiocese of Sofia; Propaganda Fide; Pavel Ioscich (Jošić); Urban College

Father Evgeny Bosilkov and the Historical Memory of the Bulgarians

Svetlana Karadzhova

Institute for Literature, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences

https://doi.org/10.53656/bel2025-5-0SK

Abstract. Blessed Eugene Bosilkov served for 12 years as a parish priest in the largest village of the Banat Bulgarians in Bulgaria. Historicity is infiltrated into the life of the community through the speeches Father Eugene Bosilkov delivers on certain holidays associated with significant anniversaries. His life among the Banat Bulgarians and his high culture put him at the centre of national events that required him to forge links between the representatives of the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Bulgarians with their divided ways through time. His “Speech on Abagar” and “Speech on the Chiprovtsi Uprising” mark two of the key moments where the two variants of Bulgarian meet and highlight the role of figures such as Philip Stanislavov and Peter Parchevich.

Keywords: banat Bulgarians, Evgeniy Bosilkov, Filip Stanislavov, Petar Parchevich
